As you can see in this first photo, the stand has large 12″ solid rubber wheels and a big rubberized handle to roll it around the site and get the saw where you need it. And it has built-in extensions with a roller on the left extension to help you handle longer stock with ease.

Having read user reviews of this stand and a couple others made to go with high-end contractor miter saws, the Makita stands out. One of the others earned complaints because the wheels are so small, it tips over when it’s being pulled around a job site. The other comes with pneumatic tires that are prone to puncturing with all the loose nails in a construction area.

And one was deemed too light-weight and flimsy for the heavy saw being put on it. The Makita 195083-4 doesn’t have either of these problems.

The LS1216L is one of Makita’s new generation of miter saws and it’s one impressive machine! It comes with a long list of state-of-the-art features for versatility, ease of use  and increased cutting capacity. And power.

Let’s start with the capacity. With its patented retractable rear guard and the triple gear drive system that allows the motor housing to sit higher than other miter saws, the LS1216L will cut 8″ crown molding (nested) and up to 6-1/2″ baseboard (vertical). It has 5-1/2″ tall adjustable sliding fences for not only supporting tall stock, but also for more precise miter and bevel cuts. You can slide the upper portion of the fences outward to give you clearance for bevel cuts, while sliding the lower portion inward to better support and stabilize the material.

With its four rail slide system, it gives you rigidity and accuracy in your cuts all the way out to 15″  at 90° and 10-1/2″ at 45°. It’s easy to move around the job site, with the big rubberized handle and 12″ solid rubber wheels. And that’s a good thing, especially since this stand is no light duty, light-weight model: it weighs in at a solid 90 pounds.

And that’s also a good thing because you want solid, stable and lots of support for your saw. You don’t want flexing in the stand when you’re cutting compound miters in crown molding!

Speaking of crown molding, this baby has support extensions that will extend out an additional 9″ with help from the feed roller. Take it from this reviewer, you don’t want to be fighting the weight and flex of an 8′ piece of lumber when you need an accurate cut!

I think those comments tell us the
Makita LS1221 12-in Compound Miter Saw is one great saw. At $359.99 with $6.99 flat rate shipping, it’s also a great buy. (Price and shipping cost subject to change.)

Like all Makita tools, this saw is designed for versatility, allowing you to do more things with it than many others. For example, it has a pivoting fence and lots of clearance below the motor housing that allows for cutting crown moulding up to 5-1/2″ in height.

And that same clearance makes it possible to cut stock as large as a 4 x 6 (3-7/8″ x 6″ at 90°). With its powerful 15 amp motor developing 4,000 RPM, it won’t strain or bog down cutting that heavy timber, either.

Then there are all the positive stops built in: at 15°, 22.5°, 31.6°, 45° both right and left and 0°, of course. This feature is a real time saver, not to mention it assures accurate miter cuts.

For comfort and ease of use, the ergonomically designed handle is a large horizontal D. To this reviewer, this is definitely preferable to a vertical handle. Your mileage may vary, however.

Another thing Makita builds into their tools is portability and this saw is no exception. At just a shade over 36 pounds, you won’t feel like you’re lugging around a monster if you’re a job site user. But it’s not flimsy, either, it’s solidly built.

One last note on the versatility of this saw: It takes any 12″ blade with a standard 1″ arbor so you can really take advantage of the multitude of possible uses with the huge selection of aftermarket and specialty blades on the market.

If you’re looking for a well-made, tough 12″ compound miter saw, this one fits the bill. The Makita LS0714 is the ideal miter saw for cutting mouldings, or getting accurate square or angled/mitered cuts on framing lumber. It would also be perfect for shops that need to cut small aluminum extrusions, such as picture frames  (with a non-ferrous blade installed, of course, see note below).

But this saw doesn’t stop there. It will cut a 2×12 at 90 degrees and a 2×8 at 45 degrees. For its size and weight, this has GOT to be the most versatile slide miter saw ever made – and with the well-known Makita quality and durability besides. And speaking of quality, this model has four steel guide rods in the slide mechanism for stability and accuracy of cuts.

The only drawback to this saw is the odd blade size. There are virtually no aftermarket blades in a 7.5″ size available.

However…..

One feature that’s not often mentioned is a depth of cut adjustment, making it possible to use 7-1/4″ blades. There’s a HUGE selection of this size, including specialty blades for uses like cutting plastic, aluminum and hardwoods, even Melamine. And you’d only lose 1/8″ of cut width and depth using the smaller blade.

Note: Makita and other manufacturers of miter saws don’t necessarily endorse the use of their products for cutting aluminum. However, the reality is thousands of them are in use for exactly that purpose daily.

This saw is in a class pretty much by itself. It’s lightweight and very portable and well-suited to general use on the job site. But, being a 7-1/2″ it does have its limitations.
